The test shot of our potential performer was fairly basic; we got to test how the performer would come out on camera and my knowledge of the lyrics but in terms of camera angles and editing it was pretty basic; We did not edit the video in FinalCut Pro and add in any special effects, transitions or even different camera angles which is unfortunate as it would have given us the opportunity to get creative and show of our skills.
What we could have done is filmed the test shot in three different locations and then edited the shots in FinalCut Pro to make it like a music video with all these different base tracks and camera angles, it would have also been great practice for the actual filming of our music video as it would make us more aware of what we need to do and avoid doing to get good quality shots; the test shot would have acted as a learning curve and showed us what we need to do when it comes to actually taking the equipment out and filming for our music video.
In a way, the test shot we have now has acted as a learning curve because its shown us that we need to not only be going out and filming stuff for our blogposts we need to edit and fix up these videos because they will show our editing skills and knowledge of the equipment and programmes whilst also getting across the point we are trying to make in the blogpost.

Planning: Background information on M.I.A
Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam (Tamil: மாதங்கி 'மாயா' அருள்பிரகாசம், Mātaṅki 'Māyā' Aruḷpirakācam ?; born 18 July 1975[2]), better known by her stage name M.I.A., is an English recording artist, songwriter, painter and director of Tamil descent. The moniker "M.I.A." is both a play on her own name and a reference to the abbreviation for Missing in Action. Her compositions combine elements of electronic, dance, alternative, hip hop and world music. M.I.A. began her career in 2000 as a visual artist, filmmaker and designer in West London before beginning her recording career in 2002. Since rising to prominence in early 2004 for her singles "Sunshowers" and "Galang", charting in the UK and Canada and reaching number eleven on the Billboard Hot Dance Singles Sales in the US, she has been nominated for an Academy Award, two Grammy Awards and the Mercury Prize.

Planning: Editing Ideas!
When I reflected on all the ideas we had for our music video, including all the key concepts of mise en scene, location, motif and props and stuff, I realised that myself and the rest of the group members had not considered any editing ideas... obviously we want the editing to be flawless and transition into the next scene without a hitch, but we did not consider if we wanted to add special effects such as split screen or wipe etc.
What we are definitely going to do in the editing process of the music video is match the camera shots and pace of the music video with the sounds and chorus of the song: particularly the gunshot and cash register sounds. Rather than having the visual aid of a gun or the cash machine like the original artist does, we will make the scenes in the music video match the pace of the sounds. Also with the lipstick idea we had, we will transition into the same shot of the artist at the exact same position just wearing a different lipstick colour every 3 seconds.
Some new ideas that I just considered is when we are in Camden Town, we could have a shot of our artist walking through the busy and crowded streets of Camden Town like we originally planned; however in the editing we could reverse it so it looks like the artist is walking in reverse and the effects of the people in the shot going about their business will look much more effective and interesting if reversed.
Also, we could get shots of objects at the locations such as the fountains at Kings Cross. We film the fountains and what's going on around them and then in the editing process speed the shot up so its going very fast so everything that happened in that day's filming is condensed into one very quick shot; this effect I think would be amazing and would go well with the introduction of the song.
These are just some rough ideas but after careful consideration I think these will look very good in the music video and I could visualize them working well.

Planning: Risk Assessment
When we go out filming there are going to be many external risks that are out of our control; the possibility of theft of the camera or tripod when filming in crowded and big exterior locations, especially Camden Town, Brick Lane and Kings Cross. When we film in these locations our group is going to have to be extremely careful; one person will be in charge of the camera and another the tripod and will never take their eyes of the equipment; that way someone is always with the equipment and knows where it it is... this makes it less likely that theft will occur or that anything will get lost or accidently left behind somewhere such as on transportation like the bus or train which we will be using to travel to our exterior locations... these modes of transport tend to be very packed and crowded so extra precautions need to be taken.
During our filming time in Kings Cross we need to be wary that the fountain (which we plan to use as backdrop for a base track) does not get within distance of the camera as the water will damage the camera and could possibly damage or break it.
At Ladbroke Grove skatepark we need to be cautious of not getting too close to the skateboarders when filming them as they could crash into the equipment and break or damage it. Our performer also needs to stay at a distance as she could get hurt quite badly if one of the skateboarders crashes into her. At the skatepark, we need to be aware of our footing in the sense of how we set up the camera and where we step as the skatepark has quite an uneven ground; especially the ramps which we will be standing on and be next to when filming and if we aren't careful we could trip and hurt ourselves or the equipment could be set up unsteadily and get damaged or broken.
Planning: Review of M.I.A's album
Here are some reviews I read about MIA's third album 'Maya', released in 2010:
Most of the reviews were quite posititve and many gave MIA's Album over four stars, the general consensus of the reviews was that M.I.A's album is very creative and that she has a unique, different sound to her voice. However,The Telegraph was quite harsh with their review as they said that her attempt at creating a different sound had the opposite effect. MIA is a controversial and independent artist so I would expect that not everyone would like her style and music.
Planning: Budgeting
The budget for our music video will be fairly small as we will not require a lot of props; we plan to use the natural props of the locations we will be filming at rather than providing our own props. Our performer Aleksandra will provide the costume and makeup along with Emily who is going to be acting as the makeup artist and costume designer on the day so we will not have to spend a huge amount of money on mise en scene except for a couple of bright lipstick colours that we will need for the filming that we do not already have such as purple, orange and green.
However, we do intend to buy lots of colourful sweets as they will tie in with our motif of colour so we will most likely go to the 99p store and buy flying saucers, jelly beans and any other colourful sweets we can get our hands on; money wont be a problem as these sweets cost less than £1.
For our interior locations (e.g Emily's house) There we will need to have lots of paperplanes; this is very cheap and pretty much does not need a budget as we will be making all of the paperplanes ourselves; we might go to Tesco to buy the colourful sugar paper but the plain white paper and most of the coloured paper we intend to get from our college which has a bountiful amount of paper.

Planning: How to make a paper plane
Since our motif is paper planes we will need to know how to make paper planes when we use them as props in the scenes that are going to be filmed at Emily's house. We are going to need at least a hundred or so paper planes as they are going to become apart of the decor and interior of Emily's bedroom; which is spacious and pretty wide. The paper planes will be stuck all over the walls and ceilings to become a part of the wallpaper and will be hung up in the scenes that are going to be filmed in the cellar so we basically need A LOT of paper planes.
Here is a pretty basic and easy to follow video I found on youtube that explains how to make the perfect paper plane:

Planning: Weather Forecast for Filming Days
Since Group 10 is going to be filming the bulk of our music video in the second half of half term it has given us time to get all our final details prepared and ready for when we go pick up our equipment at 3:30pm on Thursday 1st November. However, the one thing that we do not have the power to control is the weather and since most of our locations are exterior we will be spending the majority of the time outside in public filming.
However, this could be a problem if the weather isn't very good, particularly if it rains we will not be able to film as the equipment could get damaged or broken and we do not have anything to protect the camera and tripod with. Also, rain, snow and thunder is not apart of our motif or location ideas in any way so this could give us shots that aren't what we wanted and could give possibly make the locations we plan to film at unaccessible if they are closed due to the bad weather or dangerous because of the conditions.
Here are screenshots of what the weather is predicted to be like on days we will be filming at this week:
We will be meeting up at 10am and filming from that time up to the end of the day, or at least until we have shots that we are satisfied with so that should add up to about 8 hours of filming on friday. It looks like it will rain slightly at 3pm on friday but the rest of the day looks to be dry but slightly cloudy.

THURSDAY 1ST NOVEMBER:
It looks like it will be raining from 9 to 12 but from 1pm onwards the weather is expected to be fairly sunny but most importantly dry which is good for us as we will be filming from 3:30pm onwards.
FRIDAY 2ND NOVEMBER
SUNDAY 4TH NOVEMBER
On Sunday it is expected to be mostly dry but it will rain pretty heavily in the afternoon, however, this does not affect our filming schedule because Sunday being our last day of filming, we are going to be filming at Emily's house in her bedroom and cellar so the weather will not affect our filming.
Overall the weather seems to be working to our favour and it does not seem like we will be unable to film on the days we have planned out. However, we will be bringing big umbrellas as a precaution to protect the equipment when we are filming in the exterior locations; which will be on Thursday 1st November and Friday 2nd November.
Planning: How to get to Camden
We are going to be filming in Camden Town on Friday 2nd November; this day will be our longest filming day as we plan to get a lot of shots in various locations all over Camden so we will be meeting up at 10am and filming all day; hopefully getting a lot of great shots.
The Group will meet up at 10am at Angel Station and travel together to Camden Town. Here are two different journeys we could take with either the choice of transport being bus or train:

Planning: How to get to Kings Cross
We will be picking up the equipment at 3:30pm on Thursday 1st November. From there on, we will travel to Kings Cross to film at the station and fountains; this is the location we are going to be filming at first because it is nearest to the college and the easiest and closest to get to.
Here is a screenshot taken from TFL Journey Planner that tells us how to get there. There are several different modes of transport we could take but we decided that taking a bus would be more convenient as it won't take that long as Kings Cross is nearby so we don't see the point or any reason to pay for the tube.

Planning: Travel Guide to Ladbroke Grove Skatepark
When we start filming we are going to need to know how to get to the locations we are going to be filming at; especially since we are going to be traveling with the camera and tripod we need to be very aware of our surroundings so we can't have things like getting lost or not knowing how to get to the locations hinder our filming time.
Here is a screenshot of the fastest and easiest way to get from Angel Station (Where our group will be meeting) to Ladbroke Grove Station. The total journey time should be 28 minutes which isn't very long.
Once we arrive at Ladbroke Grove Station we will walk to the skatepark; It will take us about 5 minutes to get to the skatepark as it is only two roads away from Ladbroke Grove Station. Here is a picture of the directions we will have to take to get to the skatepark.

Feedback from Mary
In lesson today my media teacher Mary, gave us all an individual
interview with us to see how we are progressing and we can do to improve our
blogs. For me she commented that I have done some good blogging on the use of
technology and the different theories. However she mentioned that I should
stick to the deadlines more although I was in hospital for 2 weeks. She told me
the blogs I need to catch up on as she showed me what I needed to do. She wrote
down four main targets before we began to film.
- · Create a target audience blog separately and in more detail
- · Analyse 3 music videos
- · Keep on top of things and up to date
- · Begin the production schedule before half term
Also Mary had mentioned that although we have
many group bogs, I should focus on some individual ones more and we should do
our blogging in detail and every little thing we do we should blog and not just
to stick to the blogging criteria and exaggerate and come up with more ideas.
Planning: Animatic
Animatic
This is our animatic, we used our story board to create it. As pointed out before, due to our video following Andrew Goodwin's theory of disjuncture we've decided not to plan out our whole video but instead shoot lots of base tracks in many different locations. The shots in this video are repeated, this is to highlight the fact we're using base tracks and will go back to shots. We plan to make our video colourful as shown in the animatic through clothing, graffiti walls, lipstick colours etc. And as shown in the video paper planes are a motif that continues throughout the video, and towards the end of the video we intend to make the planes colourful as apposed to the white ones in the beginning.
Planning: Expectations from the Audience
Today we went out in college to try and find people who fit our audience profile but it wasn't as easy as it seemed as it was 9:30 in the morning and everyone was in lesson. However, we were able to come across some people coming in and out of college and asked them if they would allow us to film them. We asked several different people but not everyone wanted to be filmed and surprisingly most of the people we asked either didn't know who MIA was or hadn't heard the song Paper planes so we were limited in the sense of who we could film. Those who allowed us to film them below were played the song and then asked what came to mind about the music video having just heard the song.

Planning: Test Shot of Potential Performers
Here is a test shot of our artist singing along to the song 'Paperplanes' by MIA; the song we are going to be making into a music video.
Thursday, 18 October 2012
Research: Analysis of 3 music videos that have influenced my final planning decisions
The artist whose song we are going to be using is quite hard to categorize solely into one music genre as she fits into several categories. These include:
- World Music
- Electronic Music
- HipHop Music
- Garage/Alternative Music
- Dancehall Music
So M.I.A is quite a diverse artist who combines many elements from different music genres to create her own unique sound; she especially does this with music videos. The three music videos that have influenced my final planning decisions are music videos that fall into one of the five mentioned music genres above.
REDLIGHT - GET OUT MY HEAD
Redlight is an artist that falls into the Garage and Dancehall genre. The reason the music video for the song 'Get out my head' has influenced me is because firstly the music video is completely disjuncture and unrelated to the lyrics of the actual song. The actual song is about a romantic relationship between two people and the bass, instruments and general vibe of the song would give the listener a preconception of quite a clubby, showy music video; which it is not. There are at least 10 different base tracks in this music video; all very different from one another as there are locations such as a Church, Carnival, The Streets etc. Also, as this is quite a fast paced song the editing of the music video is very fast and snappy and completely in sync with the base and pace of the song; which is very effective and visually appealing and also intriguing as the camera never stays in one location for longer than five seconds. This is a concept that we would like to introduce into our music video; particularly with the chorus which is just sounds of gunshots and a cash till which is very rapid and fast so instead of doing what the original artist does in her music video (Miming these sounds with her body language) we will edit scenes to the pace of these sounds which I think will be very effective and visually appealing to the viewer.
FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE - SPECTRUM
Although this music genre is fairly different to that of our artists the reason this music video has influenced the planning for our music video is because of the use of colours. Throughout the entire music video there is a burst of bright and different colours which has being illustrated through shiny props like the chandelier and the lighting is quite exaggerated and unnatural which only emphasizes all the different colours everywhere and makes the locations and scenery that much more effective. Also the mise en scene, particularly the eye makeup and costume is very vivid, eye catching and different. This music video has being a heavy inspiration on our decision with what type of makeup we would like our artist to wear; bright colours not only in the costume but in the makeup itself is very eye catching and appealing and emphasizes and compliments the colour of the location, props and mise en scene.
KREAYSHAWN - GO HARD
The music video to the song 'Go Hard' is very bright and colourful; this is particularly illustrated through the use of colour, especially location e.g. The Graffiti walls, makeup and costume choice. The reason I have drawn inspiration from this music video is because Kreayshawn has a target audience that is very similar to our own audience profile and her genre of music is fairly similar to MIA's. The choice of costume, makeup and location is very effective because of the choice of colour; everything is vivid and very colourful which is something we would like to implement into our music video. Also, the editing matches the pace of the song itself; an example of this is when you hear the sound of vinyl being scratched the artist mimics the sound but the editing speeds the movement up so it matches the pace exactly. Also, the use of special effects is very entertaining and a concept that we would like to use; an example of this is when the artist sprays the graffiti can and purple air comes out. The artist also has one scene where she is singing the chorus and the words 'La La La' come out of her mouth in bright bubble text; things like this make the music video really fun to watch.
Planning: Potential Green Screen pictures
Here are two images that we have considered having on the green screen as a backdrop in one of our scenes for our music video:
The reason we choose this picture is because it will tie in nicely with the locations that we will have at the beginning of our music video; lots of natural light and quite colourless, in the sense that there is not a bright burst of colour like there will towards the end of the music video. This image also ties in with the paper plane motif as paper planes fly and you would
imagine them against a backdrop like this one.
Finally, we chose this image because naturally our motif is paper planes so we will have lots of different images of paper planes on the Green Screen as a backdrop. Also, if possible, we would like to have a video up on the Green Screen of paper planes being thrown constantly as a backdrop whilst our artist sings the song as we feel this will have a nice effect and its important to really strongly show the viewers what the motif of the music video is.
Planning: (Inspiration) Stooshe - Waterfalls
Here is a music video for the song 'Waterfalls' by the girl band Stooshe that I saw today. Looking at their locations and choice of costume, makeup and props its quite similar to what I would envision our music video being like. As we have the motif of paperplanes and colour I related to this music video quite alot because their locations are very similar to places that my group is going to be filming at, such as Ladbroke Grove skatepark and Camden Town. Their costumes and makeup is edgy and modern and quite similar to the idea that we had for our artists image; the clothing that they wear you wouldn't see people wearing on a daily basis; their costumes have that entertainment value and are visually appealing and interesting to the viewer. This music video is amplification as it adds a new layer of meaning to the lyrics which is admirable rather than having a typical illustrative music video that follows the lyrics word for word and shot by shot. This music video has definitely givien me some new ideas for our costume for the artist; particularly makeup.
Planning: Health and Safety Form
This is the Health and Safety form everyone had to sign today. In the form it gives us an outline of the behavior expected of us when we have booked the equipment, how to look after it, treat it and generally be careful when filming in public places as there are many health and safety issues such as theft, the equipment getting broken or damaged and the general safety of our group members.
Research: Feedback from Mary
In today's lesson I had an individual chat with my teacher Mary and she set me three targets that I need to reach in terms of blogposts and gave me critical feedback on how I can improve my blog.
Mary feels that I have a solid set of blogposts and that I already have good use of different technology for my blogs but she also says that I am sticking strictly to the blogging guideline and that I need to get more creative with my blogs; such as doing more blogs that look more deeply into creative ideas such as makeup, costume and location and to make blogposts on anything that I have seen in the media that I could draw inspiration from and take ideas from for my own music video.
The three targets that Mary has set me is to:
- Think about extra blogging outside of the blogging checklist (Ideas and inspiration from media and other artists)
- Finish of the three music video analyses that I have drawn inspiration from
- Although I already have a wide variety of different technology that I have being using for my blogposts I need to keep this to a constant by using even more technology such as Prezi, Wordle, GoAnimate, GIF's, Vlogs and technology like Photobucket
Another thing that Mary asked me is to try have more blogs that shows our group as a team and working together; although we have group blogs and have worked together we don't have things that visually show us working together such as pictures of us at the mac's or behind a camera filming together. This talk with Mary was very helpful as it informed me what my quality of work is at the moment and where I am in terms of progress and my potential grade. It also helped me to understand what I need to do to make my blog of an even higher quality and what I need to get up to date on so I plan on taking all of the above things mentioned into account to make my blog even better.
Planning: Website for original artist
After much research into our artist MIA, I discovered that she has two websites that could be considered 'official'. The rest were mostly fan sites but these two have news and information that gives fans an update on what the artist is getting up to. Even though MIA is a fairly independent and alternative artist I expected that she would have an official website that keeps fans up to date but it was very hard to find an official website that you would usually easily find with a popular artist. However, I came across her myspace page, which has not being updated in a while, and found that she doesn't really promote her brand and products that much; I think she relies more on her devoted fans being up to date with her business themselves rather than constantly reminding them which constitutes the fact that she has a devoted and reliable fan base that know what they need to know about her; such as upcoming songs, albums, photo shoots and any impending appearances and concerts.
On her page, she has a simple layout with times and dates for any appearances that she will make, and pictures and videos of her songs and brand image. As you can see, the layout is fairly simple and subtle; its not very flashy and exaggerated; You would expect to see such a layout with a unknown band or artist that is looking to get discovered; she is a fairly popular artist (her hit song Bad Girls) so this is quite surprising to see.
This shows her dedication to her music alone rather than letting the flashiness of her website affect her work and music; she focuses solely on the quality of the music rather than over promoting herself to draw in fans and attention to herself which is a fresh and respectable approach.
Here are some bigger screenshots of the two websites so you can get a feel of the vibe and general layout of it.

Planning: Audience
Here is a detailed idea of who our target audience will be, what kind of things they are into, what they do in their spare time and just generally what brands and types of clothes and music and products they are into. We have chosen to make our audience profile be based on a female audience because we feel our music video and the artist will appeal mostly to the female genre. Males will also find this type of music and artist appealing as we plan to apply Laura Mulvey's theory on dismemberment and the male gaze in our music video.
Planning: Makeup Ideas
Mise en scene is going to play a very important role in our music video; prehaps even more than the locations and editing and camera shots will. This is because our aim with our music video is to entertain our target audience and viewers; particularly with costume and makeup.
One very solid idea that we had for our makeup is to have lots of shots of the performer, which is myself, in the same location and position but wearing different makeup everytime. We were thinking of having one shot where our performer will be standing against the graffiti wall at Ladbroke Grove Skatepark and with editing show our performer in the exact same position but the makeup will change quite obviously. Our makeup will be very bright; particularly the colour of lipstick which will vary from bright colours that you wouldn't see many females wearing on a daily basis such as orange, blue, pink, purple etc. We will start of our makeup at the beginning of the music video quite subtle and not very eye catching and then as the music video progresses we will inject more colour into the scenes; just as we plan to do with our locations which will start of quite natural and modern and then progress to a bright burst of colour; this links into our motif of gradually introducing more and more colour and then when the music video comes to an end the viewer will not have realised the transition which will be very obvious in comparison to the beginning of the music video.
We will also experiment with eye makeup; different, colourful shades of eye shadow and even different colours of mascara such as blue and purple. We have most of these cosmetics already but might buy what is necessary and essential to our costume and makeup.
We will also experiment with patterns with our makeup, e.g, leopard print, zebra print and any edgy designs that we will be able to do.
Here are two makeup tutorials that i looked at for eyes and lipstick: they both show how to do these designs and seem fairly straight forward and quite simple to do:

Planning: Prezi of our Pitch
Here is the prezi we made for our pitch in order to give us a visual aid whilst we presented it to our classmates and teacher. It has a detailed analysis of all our ideas for mise en scene, location, editing and camera shots and target audience and the artists image and brand.
Music Video Pitch on Prezi
We will post separate, more detailed blogposts on the production schedule and animatic as we presented these two concepts verbally in our pitch to our teacher.

Planning: Class Pitch
Here are some videos of the pitch we presented to the class on Thursday 12th October. We talked about the concept of our music video and all the ideas we had for it such as the motif, which is paper planes, and the general mise en scene, locations we plan to film at and camera shots, angles and editing ideas we had for the production of our music video. We also talked about our artists' label; who we think they would be signed to. whether it be a independent or conglomerate record label and music videos that we drew inspiration from. This was a laborious and hard task but it helped our teachers get a general idea of the concept and ideas we have for our music video and what it will be about. it also helped give us a solid idea of what we want in our music video and the general idea for it. This will prepare us for the filming of the actual music video and will make the whole process smoother and run better.

Planning: Storyboard
This is our storyboard. We've kept it quite short as our video will be following Goodwin's theory of disjuncture. Because our video is random we don't have a set idea of how the video will go but will film many base tracks and with the editing process produce our video.
