Carol Vernallis Theory
Vernallis studied editing and camerawork closely in music videos. She noticed and pointed out that music videos have much more frequent edits than in films, that many stand out as disjunture and that the editing seems to have a rythmitic basis closely connected to the song.
The main points of her observations are summarised below:
- The usual rules of 'continuity' editing (editing usually found in classic broadcast fiction) are broken in order to draw attention to what is on screen. Edits are really obvious to draw attention to themselves, such as wipes. Jump cuts are also used, also a masser shot (base track) is frequently used to give the video a structure. Also the camera may move in time with the music.
The music video Dappy - No Regrets is the example that I've chosen below.
Here as you can see jump cuts are used in this video as the star (Dappy) moves from outdoor to indoor very frequently
