Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwin Described three types of
relations between songs and videos, these are: Illustration, Amplification and
Disjuncture.
Illustration
Illustration: This is where the video tells us the story of the lyric,
Dance is often used to express the feelings/moods in the song. A good example of an illustrative video is
Owl City’s ‘Fireflies’. Whenever Adam
Young says the word ‘fireflies’, the word appears written on a gadget, This
type of illustration also happens when he says ‘dance’ and we are shown a toy
robot doing ‘the robot’ dance. Again when he mentions a disco ball hanging by a
thread we are shown a disco ball that then drops a few seconds later.
Amplification
Amplification:
This occurs when the video introduced new meanings that don’t contradict the
lyrics of the song but add layers of meaning. This is quite a tricky category
to find a music video for, but I thought Kanye West’s ‘Good Life’ video is
amplified. The video is very in your face and features Kanye west and the
featuring TPain standing in in black and white with a white background, whilst
they draw colour into the frame. The video doesn’t contradict the lyrics but
adds more humorous meanings to the video.
Disjuncture
Disjuncture:
This is where there is little connection between the lyric and the video, or
where the video contradicts the lyrics. Kanye west’s ‘All Falls Down’ is an
example of disjuncture. The song and video are of no relation. The video shows
the end of a relationship at an airport whilst the song’s about many things;
money, self-esteem, social status, where you come from, your place in society and how we see ourselves etc. However, nothing to
do with a relationship.
