ANDREW GOODWINS THEORY, including examples of videos that follows his main ideas;

The Stucture of Music Video Rethinking Narrative Analysis

Andew Goodwin believes that traditioal narrative analysis doesn't really apply to pop videos. He staes many reasons for this but thinks it isn't because pop videos are trying to be avant garde; which means "any creative group active in the innovation and application of new concepts and techniques in a given field (especially in the arts)." He also feels that theu just approach a narriative from a different angle to films and novels.

He states the different narrative stuctures as follows:

1. Pop videos are built around built around songs - and often songs do not pose traditional narrative structures.

2. Pop videos use the singer both as a narrator and as a character

3. The singer often looks directly at the camera - this is an extension of performance and trys to involve the viewer at home with the performance.

Goodwin also states that soem videos are autonomous from the music they spring from. The visualsion of a song goes beyond the meaning of the original. As theres times where the video provides a visual pleasure and encourages repeated viewing which therefore counts as promoting the video.

These videos are example of illustration, amplification and disjunture

1. Illustration: The video tells the story of the lyirc, and dance is often used to express the feelings/moods in the songs.

2. Amplification: This occurs when the videos introduce new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning.

3. Disjunture: This is where there is little connection between the lyric and video or where the video contradicts with the lyric
